Did you notice that on most of the sausages, particularly on the end, there is a small aluminum ring on them? I bet you never gave it a second glance, you’d probably think that the ring was a waste component from manufacturing or simply added to the product. It’s tiny and easy to miss, so you likely never even thought twice about it.
However, that small aluminum ring plays a role in how the sausage is made and transported to you.
Let me tell you a bit about the importance of the little ring: It keeps sausages closed tight: Many sausages are encased using natural or artificial skins. They are closed by placing the small aluminum ring and then crimping the casing over. If that ring wasn’t on there, the sausage casing would pop open easily and your sausage would be dried out. It maintains shape: Because the aluminum ring makes sure the casing is tightly sealed and packed, it helps sausages keep their structure as they are handled in transit.
The shape will stay uniform as long as it makes it through the process.
So while you never see that small ring that’s for a specific purpose, it serves to make your sausage stay in good condition.
